The Vaseline trick has been floating around the DIY's and I wanted to show you guys how it works with Madame Butterfly Chalky Paint. The Vaseline technique creates a chippy and distressed look easily without a ton of sanding and elbow grease.

My client brought me her tables and chairs wanting a Farmhouse Rustic look. This was my chance to document this process for you guys!

As you chalk paint lovers probably already know there is no need to prep the table because we are using the best paint ever! Save that sanding power for later. I did wipe down the table with TSP to remove any dust or grease. It was clean so it didn't take much. I am going to paint righ rover the existing finish - thank you chalky paint!

Your first step in the Vaseline trick is vaseline. Put some on your finger and wipe it on in small strips, different sizes and different directions. Only apply a thin layer. If you are want your distressing to go in a certain direction or in certain spots that is where you are going to apply the vaseline.

I applied my vaseline to the top of the table in random strips, the corners, the edges of the legs, and other random spots.

You can apply your chalky paint right away. Your going to paint just like normal. Pretend the vaseline isn't even there. For this table I wanted a really worn look so I didn't go for a full coverage effect with the paint. This was my first coat.

My second coat I watered down the paint some so I could almost white wash over the first coat. I knew I was going to be sanding off a good portion of the paint and I wanted it to look super rustic so I didn't want full coverage of the underneath brown. (Forgot to take a picture of that part. In my defense I was panting in 110 degree weather. It makes you delirious)

After the paint was dry (about 2 minutes after I finished applying it) I took my power sander to the table. I use a fine grit sand paper. The only reason I used my power sander was because this is an 8 ft table. I didn't want my arms to die. I need them. If it was a smaller piece, hand sanding would be perfectly fine. Can you see all the parts where I put the vaseline? Vaseline is such a time saver when going for this kind of look. It takes the guest work right out of it!

You can see on the legs I put the vaseline on the sides of the edges which gave it a really worn look. It also gives the effect of chipping as well.

In Arizona we never see rain except for monsoon season. When monsoon season hits it rains like crazy in a short amount of time. Monsoon season so happened to start right as I was working on this table. The humidity is not only killing me when I have to work in it but I have to wait for it to die down before I put Madame Butterfly sealer on.

Finished pictures coming as soon as we get a humidity free day!
