How to Tape Off and Paint Chevron Stripes

I like unique and this is what I got out of this project today. Not intentionally but I learned to love it. This table is the only thing left of my husbands bachelor days and he refuses to get the rid of it. In our compromise I was able to paint it to match the other furniture I've painted.

For two years the poly seal I put on it kept really well, especially with 4-5 children who all stood/danced on the table at least once. The only thing it didn't holdup against is my mode podge projects and fingernail polish. I had to give it a new coat with Madame Butterfly Chalk Paint. Chalk Paint sticks to anything so I brushed it on right over the seal.

I've had this small obsession with yellow lately and I've been slowly pulling into my living room decor. I made this beaut this weekend. Found the mirror for $10 on a Facebook yardsale page, picked up the wreath at Joanne's for $8 (75% off with my coupons) and found some ribbon in my ribbon hoarding stash.

I already had this clock hanging. It was my first yellow. The hubs sent me a picture of this clock and said "this is so you". I had to make one. Another Facebook find for $6, $15 for the vinyl and I used the yellow touch up paint I had from my front room walls.

Today I decided to add the all so popular chevron and my yellow craving onto my coffee table. Google is the answer for all your problems, questions, and ideas unless its medical and you freak out easily....I found this blog that had a great tutorial on how to tape off chevron stripes. I wasn't sure exactly how she measured hers out so I winged mine.

I started out by taping a cross in the middle of my table for a guide. I taped off the edges and had to move them later so its not a necessary step in the beginning.

I measured out 1 1/2" in-between each piece of tape. Like I said, I'm winging it here. I taped all pieces in one direction and then the other direction.

And this is what I got.

I was half tempted to leave it like this but the semi-perfectionist in me noticed the diamonds weren't all the same size.

I stared at it really hard for a while. Then I stared at it some more. I finally was able to see where the chevron would be and what pieces I needed to cut out. It all started to make a little more sense.

Grab your paint and paint brush and start painting away. The yellow is a little light so I needed about 3 coats. Don't be impatient like me or give into children peer pressure to remove the tape to soon. Let it fully dry before you start peeling off the tape. This is what happens.

Beautiful! The painter in me couldn't resist distressing a little.

Now I am satisfied with the amount of yellow I have in my living room. My life is complete. Next- new drapes.
