Illuminating Powders - How to Tutorial

I have had a lot of questions about our new Illuminating Powders lately so I wanted to give you guys a little tutorial. I am a little partial but they are FANTASTIC! Very universal and super easy to use.

What are Illuminating Powders?
Illuminating Powders are inert pigment that exhibits extreme colorfastness and stability. All of our powders are very versatile and they retain their original hue and intensity without fading or running. Use them on fabric, paper, leather, glass, canvas, wood, and more. Make details pop or use in place of leafing.
There are a few ways Illuminating powders can be used. Mix them with MB Finishing Wax, Sealer or use them as a dusting powder.
Illuminating Powders with Finishing Wax
In a separate container starting with a 3:1 ratio mix wax with the illuminating powder of your choice. The more powder you mix the more intense the effect is.
Mix well

Use your Easy Paint Round Brush to brush on the wax mixture over details, all over your piece, or where ever you want.

Wait until the wax is dry in about 3-5 minutes then buff with a lint free cloth. For a very subtle effect start buffing sooner.

This sample was painted in Age-old White, glazed in Red Sienna then waxed with Bronze Illuminating Powder over the top. Notice the wax/powder mix settles into the cracks and creases and adds a little shimmer.

Here's a sample over raw wood. You can really see the depth it adds.

Illuminating Powders mixed with Sealer

Take leafing to a whole new level when mixing MB Sealer and Illuminating Powders. Eliminate all leafing steps, difficulty and expense.

In a separate container starting with a 3:1 ratio mix sealer with the illuminating powder of your choice. The more powder you mix the more intense the effect is.
Mix Well

When mixed with MB Sealer- apply it and let it dry. To apply use your Easy Paint Round Brush or your finger. The effect mixing with sealer creates is more dramatic.

Illuminating Powders used as Dusting Powder

We used Antique Silver Illuminating Powder over Finishing Wax in the details. Apply the wax or sealer first then dust the powder on over the finish. When dusting over wax you still need to buff as normal after 3-5 minutes. This technique is the most subtle of all the techniques.

Illuminating Powders come in 4 oz jars in Antique Silver, Antique Gold, Antique Bronze and Antique Copper. Purchase Illuminating Powders on our website
